Fee Structures
Annual License Fee by Number of Spayed/Neutered Animals:
- 1 altered pet - $15
- 2-4 altered pets - $25
- 5-8 altered pets - $50
- 9-12 altered pets - $100
- 13-16 altered pets - $125
- 17-19 altered pets - $150
Annual License Fee by Number of Unaltered Animals
- 1 altered pet - $50
- 2-3 altered pets - $300
Note: you are allowed only three (3) unaltered animals in a residentially zoned dwelling.
Fees may be paid in person with cash, check, or credit card. Fees may be paid by mail with check or money order. Fees may also be paid by calling SBARC at 574-235-9303.
Important: You must provide proof of rabies shot for each pet and proof of spay/neuter (if applicable) for your application to proceed.

- Who's required to register?
- Any person owning, keeping, harboring, or having custody of any dog or cat over the age of six (6) months in the City of South Bend.
- How long is a license valid?
- Licenses are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue.
- Why do my pets need a rabies shot?
- Indiana state code requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets over the age of three (3) months must be vaccinated against rabies. You must provide proof of rabies for each pet.
- Do service animals need to be licensed?
- Some service animals may be exempt from fees with appropriate documentation.
- Do seniors have to pay the licensing fee?
- Seniors over the age of 62 are required to license their pets but the fee is waived.
- Can I add another pet to my license if I add a new pet to my family?
- Yes! If it bumps you up into the next fee bracket, you will be asked to pay the difference.
- Why does it cost more to register an unaltered pet?
- Unaltered pets are statistically more likely to be found running at large, to create unintended litters and to act aggressively. These behaviors require more resources from the local animal control and law enforcement agencies.
- Why should I spay or neuter my pet(s)?
- Not only will you save money on licensing fees, it is much healthier for you and your pet!
- Altering your pet:
- lessens their likelihood for developing certain types of cancers,
- reduces the risk of aggressive behaviors,
- will make cats less likely to spray and mark territory, reduces their desire to roam,
- eliminates the heat cycle,
- helps prevent unwanted litters & alleviate the pet overpopulation problem,
- makes them better, more affectionate companions!
