  • South Bend Municipal Code: Section 4-20


    Definition:

    Automotive Repair and Service Center shall mean any location where motor vehicle repair, servicing, and/or storage is done on the premises for a fee.

    General Instructions and Application Process:

    1. Assemble all required information and materials before filing application.
    2. Thoroughly review all applicable Municipal Code Sections listed above.
    3. Licenses expire January 31.
    4. Add 10% to license fee for renewal after expiration.
    5. Include $5.00 license application fee payable to City of South Bend.
    6. License fee payable to City of South Bend due at issuance - $200.00.

    Required Information and Materials:

    1. Zoning and physical description of facility to be used.
    2. Description of work to be performed on premises.

    Application Process:

    1. Review Municipal Code Sections 4-20 & 4-20.5, and NFPA Nos. 30, 33, & 70 thoroughly.
    2. Submit Application and pay $5.00 Processing Fee either over the phone or in person at City Hall.
    3. Department of Code Enforcement and Fire Prevention Bureau inspect, review and make recommendations.
    4. Zoning Department verifies the use of the property to determine whether the service being provided is permissible at said location.
    5. Ensure structure, fire suppression system, and required site fencing comply with applicable standards.
    6. License issued upon approval and payment of fee.
    7. Premises inspected by Department of Code Enforcement and Fire Prevention Bureau every six months.


    NOTE: All repairs shall be performed within a fully enclosed building. Bay doors may be open during hours of operation. No partially dismantled, wrecked, or unregistered vehicle shall be stored on site.

  • Automotive Repair and Service Center Checklist

    Please read through carefully before signing.
    • Cars stored for more than 3 days must be stored within an opaque fenced-in area
    • The fencing for the opaque fenced area must be a minimum of 6’ tall
    • All vehicles must be parked off the public street, on a drained and paved parking surface
    • Vehicles may not be parked in the public right of way, i.e. street, tree lawn, sidewalk, or alley for purposes of repairing or servicing vehicles
    • All repairs shall be performed within a fully enclosed building. Bay doors may be open during hours of operation
    • No partially dismantled, wrecked, or unregistered vehicle shall be stored on site
    • Trash and debris, auto parts, old tires etc., may not be stored outside in open view of the public
    • Signs fall under the approval of Zoning and in many cases have special
      requirements
    • Signs or other fixtures or displays may not be placed on public sidewalks or tree-lawns
    • All necessary utilities must be on and working to operate the business to meet city regulations
    • Periodic inspections are made throughout the year to maintain compliance with your license
    • Licenses are good for only one location; therefore, vehicles may not be stored in other locations waiting for service
